It seems Nikon has been listening (a little bit, at least) to what we've been asking for! Nikon's newest DSLR includes a personal favorite feature, S RAW! It looks like the S RAW will be 9MP, but anything less than the 36.3 MP will be very welcome! The D810 also features a 1 fps bump up from the D800/D800E, now giving you 5fps when shooting FX and 6fps when shooting DX. The optical low-pass filter (OLPF) is removed just like the D800E to give maximum sharpness. The new EXPEED 4 image processor supposedly gives lower noise, better image quality and even better battery life. Crazy ISO range from 64-12,800 gives you tons of versatility through many lighting conditions. The autofocus system from the D4s has trickled down as well, including the Group AF feature. The group area AF uses 5 distinct AF points (out of 51 total) to help with AF tracking. Video function has also been enhanced, now sporting full 1080p recording at 60p and uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit 60p out through the HDMI mini port to an external recorder such as our Atomos Ninja 2 or Ninja Blade.
We're excited to get the Nikon D810 in here for our rental fleet. The D800 it replaces was an exceptional camera, one we feel was unfairly maligned by wedding shooters for its "monserous" RAW file size. Hopefully the small raw option lets the D700 shooter feel like they can make the jump to what will surely be a wonderful camera.
A brief note about RAW compatibility with new cameras: Software manufacturers need time to properly add Camera RAW profiles to their software. New cameras typically will not have RAW support for the first few weeks/months of their release. :( Adobe provides the latest version of their free DNG converter (downloadable here) which MAY work for you. Unfortunately, we cannot be responsible for making sure RAW files from a new camera work with your particular computer and software so please check compatability before renting.
UPDATE 7.31.14- Adobe has released Lightroom 5.6 which includes support for D810 RAW files. Head on over to our blog to download the latest version of Lightroom! http://www.lensprotogolabs.com/lightroom-5-6-now-available/
