Better controlled lens flare with minimal breathing
What’s Changed? The Atlas Orion Silver Edition 200mm T3.2 2X Anamorphic differs from the standard edition in a couple of key areas. Flares take on the color of your light source, giving you more flexibility in getting the look you want. This is in contrast to the standard editions, which produce a blue-tinged flare. Additionally, Atlas has optimized the air spaces between the lens elements to provide a different focus fall-off. The standard edition lenses have the target optimized through-focus set for 50% fore and 50% aft, while the Silver Edition lenses have the through-focus optimized to land with best focus 25% into depth of the target focus, with a smooth 75% fall-off behind the target focus.
The Anamorphic Look. The Atlas Orion Anamorphic Prime Silver Edition lenses provide a clean, oval shaped bokeh you might expect out of more expensive anamorphics. The Orions produce a unique but well-controlled anamorphic lens flare. If you want that J.J. Abrams look, this lens will give it to you. Shining a light toward the lens in the frame will produce a wonderful flare that goes almost edge to edge depending on light strength. Unlike the standard edition of this lens, the Silver Edition has a neutral flare characteristic that assumes the color of your light source. The 200mm lens has significantly better flare control than the 40mm, which has the most wild look of the Atlas Orions.
Standardized Features. All the Orion Anamorphic lenses have the same focus and iris ring positions. This allows for super-fast lens changes just by swinging your matte box and dropping your follow focus without moving their positions. Markings in feet appear on both sides making it easy for ACs and focus-pullers to do their jobs. The entire Orion series boasts the same industry-prevalent 0.8 pitch gears, but the 200mm has a 136mm front diameter instead of the same 114mm front diameter as the rest of the Orion Silver Editions.
Compatibility. While this lens is designed for Super 35 sensor type cameras, the 31mm image circle may not provide full sensor coverage on all S35 cameras, depending on your recording format. If you have questions regarding sensor coverage, please contact us and a tech will be happy to help you determine whether this lens is right for your shoot.
Yes! For an on-camera monitor solution, we recommend the SmallHD 7-inch 702 Touch HDMI / SDI On-Camera Monitor or the SmallHD 1703 P3X 17-inch Studio Monitor with either Gold Mount or V-Mount for a production monitor solution.
Please note that the de-squeeze feature on any monitor will typically rely on your specific camera’s output. If you have questions about your anamorphic workflow, please contact us so we can help build a kit suited to your needs.
Due to this lens’s protruding rear element, we don’t recommend using it with any adapters.
