Sony's latest G-Master lens is sort of like the weird cousin at a family reunion. It means really well, but it's a bit... strange. At its core, Sony advertises this lens as a 100mm f/2.8 lens with a new bokeh-enhancing STF (Smooth Trans Focus) feature. The STF system essentially inserts a circular graduated ND filter between the aperture blades and the camera's sensor. This is designed to smooth the out of focus areas in the image to make bokeh creamy smooth. It certainly succeeds in that regard, bokeh is extremely smooth. However nothing is free, and the filter that makes the bokeh smoother cuts out 2 stops of light by the time the light hits the sensor. This means that Sony's claims of an f/2.8 means that the aperture opening is indeed f/2.8, but by the time the light hits the sensor, the amount of light is reduced to T5.6. Your camera will not register this lens as anything less than f/5.6. You will need to adjust your aperture or shutter speed as if you were shooting at f/5.6, but with pleasing bokeh as if you were using a true f/2.8 lens.
