What’s New? DJI did a lot of fine tuning to get the latest iteration of the RS gimbal faster, stronger, and more intelligent. Peak motor torque has been enhanced by over 50%, offering a lot more stability when shooting fast-moving scenes. This is supported by a 5th-gen stabilization algorithm and a new on-screen Z-axis indicator for maintaining steadier vertical movements. Physical gaps have been reduced to prevent gimbal shake when locked and the 14-hour battery fully charges in just one hour. This combo rental includes the Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, which works with the RS 5’s ActiveTrack technology to frame and track subjects over 32’ away.

What’s the Same? Though both the RS 4 and RS 5 have native vertical shooting, the RS 5 offers fine-tuning knobs to achieve better balance for heavier cameras in portrait mode. This gimbal rocks the same 1.8" OLED full-color touchscreen as its predecessor, though the navigation menu has been streamlined. Expect the same ports for connecting accessories, like follow focus motors and video transmitters, with a few new enhancements such as USB-C power pass-through from the briefcase handle and a native magnetic mount for the Tracking Module (the RS 4 required an adapter).

Electronic Briefcase Handle. While the RS 4 also had a briefcase handle, it was simply there to offer a different carrying style, improve ergonomics for low-angle shooting, and add some accessory mounting points. The new RS 5 briefcase handle has all that and more. It locks onto the NATO port on the side of the DJI RS 5 and features a built-in joystick and buttons that allow you to communicate directly with the gimbal and single-handedly control movement, switch modes, and even START/STOP recording on select cameras.

Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module. Snap this small tracking lens onto the magnetic mounting plate of the RS 5 and begin tracking your subject in a variety of modes, including orbit shots, selfies, or backwards tracking. Follow your subject through even complex scenes with ease up to 32.8’ away. It is designed to work seamlessly with the gimbal’s ActiveTrack technology. This AI-powered device can be operated with the gimbal’s joystick, the touchscreen, or with hand gestures. It is a particularly handy tool for solo shooting and doesn’t require your smartphone or an app to use.

Expanded Compatibility. With a 6.6-pound payload, this gimbal, like the RS units before it, is designed for smaller mirrorless systems. Move from gimbal to tripod without having to rebalance thanks to Position Memory and the Arca-Swiss upper plate and Manfrotto lower plate. The Bluetooth Shutter feature has been upgraded for the RS 5 to support a broader range of mirrorless cameras, while also offering improved stability and instant wireless control.
