The Canon 80D is a mid-range enthusiast DSLR and an update to the popular Canon 70D. Key features include:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS

  • Native ISO sensitivity of 100-16,000

  • 45-point all cross-type autofocus system

  • Expanded video capabilities

High-Res APS-C Sensor. The 24.2MP APS-C crop-frame CMOS sensor produces high resolution still images, as well as high quality 1080p HD video. The DIGIC 6 Image Processor also offers improved low-light performance with a native ISO sensitivity of 100-16,000. The advanced processor also makes possible 7fps in continuous shooting mode.

Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOSautofocus system provides extremely fast and accurate live view autofocus performance. This is the first iteration of the Dual Pixel focus system that supports continuous focusing in live view still mode (sadly, no tracking). On the video front, there is also a Movie Servo AF mode, which offers smooth focusing when changing distance within a shot—essentially built-in rack focusing for video shooting. You also have the option to set tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and face tracking priority—a huge leap in performance over what was previously available in DSLRs.

45-Point All Cross-Type Autofocus System. Still shooters will find the aid of a wide-area 45-point cross-type phase detection autofocus system. That means that you get really accurate, really fast autofocus even in low-light situations. Four modes allow you to hone in on specific areas including single-point AF, Zone AF (nine zones to choose from), Large Zone AF (three even larger zones to choose from) and 45-point AF auto selection.

EOS HD Video. The 80D can shoot up to 1080/60p using an IPB compression in the MP4 format. If you like the alphabet, you’ll love the 80D’s video features including the option of shooting in either .MOV or .MP4 file formats, utilizing IPB or ALL-I compression methods to increase quality, and an HDRmode that captures two frames at different exposures to create video with what appears to be a much wider dynamic range.

3.0-Inch Articulating Touchscreen LCD. The large 3.0" 1,040k-dot vari-angle Clear View II touchscreen LCDmonitor is great for shooting and image review.

Other Advanced Features. The 80D offers built-in wi-fi connectivity, allowing you to both control the camera and review images from a compatible iOS/Android device with Canon’s EOS Remote app. It also features built-in HDR and multiple exposure modes for in-camera capturing. There’s a wide variety of Auto and Special Scene modes for beginners, and in-camera RAW editing for those who are interested. The camera records its RAW/JPEG images and video files to SDHC/XC memory cards, and uses the same Canon LP-E6 battery as its predecessor with a rated output of 920 shots per charge (210 using live view).
