The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II is a true workhorse of a lens. There is very little that this lens cannot do. The 70-200mm has it all: great range, nice compression, good bokeh, a constant f/2.8 aperture, AF-S, weather sealing & Vibration Reduction. Those features plus outstanding image quaility are the reasons this lens is so popular. Paired with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 you can shoot just about anything.
The 70-200 f2.8 is the second generation of this lens, the big improvements are increased corner sharpness and a reduction in light fall off. The VR also benefited from upgrades improving its rating to nearly 4-stops greater than your actual shutter speed. What does that mean? Basically if you were to shoot at 1/60th of a second the VR will assist you as if you were shooting at 1/1000 sec to minimize camera shake.
This lens is phenomenal for all types of shooting but its considered standard equipment for wedding photographers and indoor sports shooters alike. The only downside is that it can get a bit heavy if you're shooting for extended periods of time. At 3.4lbs its somewhat like attaching a bottle of wine to your camera. If you think you're not up to the task of hand holding, you may want to look into getting a monopod, or the sub 2lb. Nikon 70-200 f/4.
Overall a lens you really can't go wrong with! Rent one today!
