This new Nikon 600mm f/4 VR is the longest Nikon lens that we offer. Everything about a lens like this is extreme; the size, the weight, the performance, and particularly the price. That’s why super-telephoto lenses all make much more sense to rent vs. buy for most photographers. Its hard to justify the expense unless you’re shooting subjects that require this much focal length all the time. Why own a $9,800 lens when you can rent one?
One of the most common applications for the Nikon 600mm f4 is for smaller bird species at medium to close distances, or larger birds of prey who nesting in remote areas. The 600mm focal length allows you to really fill the frame and get in close. Other wildlife and sports applications are obvious. Basically, anytime you’ve got a lot of ground between you and your subject the Nikon 600mm f4 will magically close the distance. If you need just a touch more reach, rent a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter (TC-14E II) and expand the lens to an astounding 840mm f/5.6.
The other big feature of this lens is the VR (vibration reduction) system. Its designed with two modes, one for normal operation when mounted to a monopod and a “tripod” mode that is designed to help cancel out high frequency vibrations. Minimum focusing distance has been reduced to roughly 16 feet making the lens a little more useable up close. There is also a focus limiting switch (infinity to 6 meters) which will decrease subject acquisition time if the AF system hunts by cutting out a good portion of the 600mm’s focusing range.
Obviously when you shoot with a lens of this size & weight, support is very important. Be sure that your tripod and head are up to the task. We recommend the Induro CT-414 legs and either the Induro BHD-1 ball head or the Induro GHB2 gimbal head.
When you rent a Nikon 600 f/4 from LensProToGo we approach the rental like a working pro that actually has to go out & shoot with the gear. That’s why we ship all of our super telephoto lenses in the Tenba Long Lens cases. It not only provides protection for the gear in transit, but also gives you a practical means for transporting the lens while shooting. With room for your camera body & a padded pocket for a gimbal like the Induro GHB-2 its much more convenient than the rigid box style trunks that Nikon provides.
Please let us know if you would like to have a Wimberley type plate included with the lens.
