Nikon Defocus Control. If you’re so inclined, you can use the unique defocus-control feature can produce some interesting effects. The DC ring on the front of the lens can be set to “defocus” either the front or rear out-of-focus areas when the lens is shot at wide apertures. Set the ring to the same aperture at which you’re shooting and the out-of-focus areas are more blurred while the subject remains sharp. Set it to a different aperture and the entire image softens, which can be useful for romantic portraits.
