Nikon D800E DSLR
The Nikon D800E is the camera aimed at studio and commercial shooters. The D800E removes the optical low-pass filter from the sensor to squeeze a touch more sharpness from the 36.3 MP sensor. The D800E's lack of a AA filter makes it more susceptible to moire and false color artifacts, please be sure your shooting environment is suited for this type of sensor.
Nikon really shook up the camera market with the D800 & D800E. The ground breaking 36.3 MP full frame sensor is as arguably the best ever put into a 35mm sized camera. ISO performance matches that of the impressive Nikon D3 providing a ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to 25,600). Continuous shooting at up to 4 fps.
In the field the D800E is an incredibly impressive machine. It has nearly every feature you'd expect from a camera at this level. There are countless custom settings that range from autofocus tweaks to customization of function buttons on the camera. There is also a fantastic built in HDR function while shooting JPEG that produces amazing results.
The D800E also boasts some pro level HD video features as well. Although less popular than some of Canon's offerings with regards to video, the D800E is a very capable camera. One feature that stands out is the variable crop ratio for video. You can choose full frame (1.0x), APS-C crop (1.5x), or a 2.7x Crop which really expands the versatility of lenses mounted on your camera.
One area that deserves discussion with the D800E is the question of wether or not the D800 is considered the replacement for the wildly popular D700. When the specs were announced for the D800E there was a great deal of concern from the wedding & event shooting community that the 36 MP resolution was far beyond what they needed. The huge resolution increase was called into question due to the resulting raw file size increase (nearly 45-75 MB per image), and the dependence on pro quality lenses and technique to yield completely sharp images. These two factors combined make shooting the D800E a decision that must be considered for wedding work.
Additionally, if you are going to be renting the D800E and plan to shoot RAW files, please be sure that your computer is up to the task of editing. Older systems will with less than 4-8GB of RAM will work, albeit fairly slowly with the huge files the D800E produces. We recommend a professional editing software such as Adobe Lighroom 4/Photoshop or Apple Aperture. Long story short, the D800E is a high performance camera that requires an equal effort by the photographer to achieve the camera's full potential.
