The Kenyon Laboratories KS-6 Gyroscope is a dual axis gyro that corrects for movement in both yaw and pitch (up/down, left/right). The KS-6 model is designed to have twice the holding power of the standard KS-4 gyro. Its well suited to helicopter & Steadicam work with its maximum panning rate of 20 degrees/second. The KS-6 is designed to handle loads of 6 lbs. This is the ideal unit to augment longer lenses for aerial photography & video work. It will attach to your camera or lens with a 1/4-20 threaded screw.
- Includes Gyro, power inverter, battery, 12-volt adapter & charger
- 2-Axis correction (Yaw, Tilt)
- Supports 6 lbs.
- 2.5-3 Hours of battery life.
If you're searching for a gyro, you already know how useful they are for removing unwanted camera movement. There are practical applications for both stills and video capture. In the realm of still photographs, a gyro gives you the ability to shoot at much lower shutter speeds when use of a tripod is inconvenient or impossible. Such applications would be shooting from a vehicle (car, boat, plane, helicopter) or structures that are inherently unstable & prone to vibration such as a bridge. Shooting car to car tracking shots is possible at shutter speeds below 1/30th of a second which results in beautiful background blur.

Gyros have a wide range of applications for video. Most obvious is stabilization while shooting from helicopters or aircraft. The thing to remember with Gyros is that they are designed to be stable and lock on to a heading. When utilizing them for video, it is important to make camera movements slow and deliberate. If you try to pan or tilt too quickly, whipping the camera back & forth, the unit will kick back destabilizing your shot. Planning your shot and making smooth moves will greatly improve your shots.
Some additional tips for success: Due to the high mass of the gyro wheels, you'll want to attach your camera prior to starting up the gyro. Once you've mounted the gyro, set the unit down and allow 6-8 minutes for it to get up to speed. Moving the gyro while it is spooling up will cause longer start times. Conversely, allow the gyro to spin down when you are finished shooting before removing it from your camera gear. You can also improve performance by removing as much weight as possible from your camera & lens setup. Additional gyro effect can be achieved by removing things such as a vertical grip or unneeded accessories.
2.5 to 3 Hours of power can be drawn from the supplied battery pack, or alternately you can power the inverter with the supplied 12 volt cigarette adapter. The unit ships in a self contained pelican case and includes a trickle charger. All of the Kenyon Gyro units are sealed with Helium to reduce the internal air resistance on the gyro wheels. Please do not attempt to open the unit as there are no serviceable parts inside the gyro housing. The inverter unit where the battery and gyro plug in does house a small fuse which is field serviceable. The battery should be stored in the charged state to avoid damaging the cells in the battery.
